Gallery walls have been a design trend for a while. And I mean it when I say a while. The french started this movement in the 1600s by decorating French courts with a plethora of paintings enriching the public with art. The trend caught on quickly throughout Europe; these large rooms with salon-style hanging would later become a networking hub for the intellectual elite. In these rooms, the art critic emerged, as it was easier to compare and contrast several art pieces at once.

But, we are not here to learn about the history of the gallery walls. We are here to discuss those beautiful gallery walls we see on Pinterest and Instagram on the daily. Those walls packed with art that make organized chaos an art form, literally. Here, I will teach you how you can curate your pieces and install your very own Gallery Wall.

Step 1: Curate your collection

There are 3 elements to consider for your collection: Texture, 2D Media, and Photography. The texture is everything that is three dimensional. Think tapestry, mirrors, plates, etc. Full texture gallery walls are beautiful and great for collectors. See examples below:

This is an excellent example of merging 2D fine arts with texture. I created—this piece for a hotel in a small surf town called Rincon in Puerto Rico. The wood slats give that driftwood-beach feel, and the motif of the wave resonates with the guests.

Step 2: Embrace the Surface

Stop looking at what others are doing and look at your space. Do you have a column in the middle of your gallery wall? Embrace it! Make a sculptural piece for it and include it as a feature in your gallery wall.

Step 3: Make a Template

Plan it out with construction paper. Lay it underneath the desired wall and plan your arrangement. When you are happy with the pieces' position, trace the frames lightly with a pencil and use the paper as a template on the wall.

Tip: Start with your largest pieces, set them far from each other, and then come in with the smaller ones to fill the gaps.

Step 4: Installation

I am embarrassed to tell you how many unwanted holes I had in my walls before getting this magical tool. Just $15 on home depot will make you an expert hanger. See how to use it below
